Curious About Craft

Curious About Craft was a Craftspace project, part of Birmingham City Council's Arts on the Move initiative. A mobile exhibition travelled to 40 wards in Birmingham from Sept 2010 to March 2011, giving local people the opportunity to see and take part in craft with a difference. Here's an excerpt from Craftspace's website:

'Curious about Craft explores craftivism – the contemporary approach which uses craft to encourage connections between people and to express the issues they care about. Making by hand offers alternatives to mass-produced goods, as one-off and personal. It’s a way of generating communities, thinking differently and enjoying a slower more sustainable life. We’ll be showing artworks that use craft for social actions, play with new ways of making and unusual materials and we’ll sometimes turn up in surprising places.'

I joined Curious About Craft for two sessions, sharing maxi-scale hand crochet techniques with visitors and working together to create sculptural forms to adorn the mobile unit.
